Common Wordle Mistakes (and Easy Fixes)

We all make them. Every Wordle player has stared at the screen and wondered how they missed something so obvious. The good news is that most Wordle mistakes fall into a handful of patterns, and each one has a simple fix. Here are the ones I see most often.

1. Reusing gray letters

It's easy to type a word you like without noticing it contains a letter that's already gray. That slot can't tell you anything new.

The fix: before you press Enter, glance at the keyboard. Every gray key in your guess is a wasted slot.

2. Putting a yellow letter back in the same spot

A yellow tile tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in that position. Putting it back in the same place throws the second clue away.

The fix: every time you reuse a yellow letter, move it somewhere new. Over a couple of guesses, that narrows down exactly where it belongs.

3. Forgetting that letters can repeat

About a third of the words in the original Wordle answer list repeat a letter. When people get stuck with "nothing left to try," a double is very often the answer.

The fix: at guess four, ask yourself, "Could any of my letters appear twice?" My double letters guide has the details, including how the colors work when you guess a repeat.

4. Assuming the word ends in S

In everyday English, lots of five-letter words are plurals ending in S. In the original answer list, only 36 of 2,315 words end in S. If you've been saving your last slot for an S, you're probably wasting it.

The fix: think E, Y, T, R or L for the last letter. Those are the most common endings. See the most common letters and positions.

5. Guessing the first word that fits

You find a pattern like _ATCH, type BATCH, and it's wrong. Then CATCH. Then HATCH. Suddenly you're out of guesses.

The fix: when you see a familiar ending, list every word that fits before you guess. If there are more candidates than guesses, use a guess that tests several of the missing letters at once. My guide to word traps walks through it.

6. Hunting vowels for too long

Once you've found two vowels, you've probably found all of them. Most answers in the original list have exactly two. Guessing word after word looking for a third vowel usually wastes turns.

The fix: switch to consonants once you have two vowels. Strong consonants like R, T, L, S, N and C narrow the list far more. More on this in vowels vs. consonants.

7. Trying to solve on guess two with too little information

If your first word found only one letter, it's tempting to guess a word that fits it. But that usually leaves you with very little new information.

The fix: when your opener finds zero or one letter, use your second guess to test five new common letters. It feels slower, but it often leads to a solve in three or four. My second-guess strategy explains when to explore and when to build.

8. Forgetting the "not here" clues

Players often remember which letters are yellow, but forget where they were yellow. After a few guesses, those position clues add up.

The fix: jot the word down with blanks and make a note under each blank: "not R, not T." It's old-fashioned, but it works.

9. Rushing the late guesses

The final two guesses are where streaks end, and they're usually lost to speed, not difficulty.

The fix: slow down at guess five. Recheck greens, yellows and grays. Say the candidate words out loud. If you're stuck, walk away for a few minutes. You have the whole day. Here's more on keeping your streak alive.

10. Overlooking less common words

The answers are real words, but some aren't ones you use every day. Words like TRYST, GLYPH and NYMPH are all in the original answer list.

The fix: if every everyday word has been ruled out, think about less common words, older words, or words with Y doing the vowel's job. A masked definition, like our third daily hint, can be a gentle way to get unstuck without the full answer.

A bonus mistake: being too hard on yourself

Wordle is a game, and some days the word wins. Every player misses sometimes, including the most dedicated junkies. Take what you learned, laugh about it, and come back tomorrow.

A quick pre-guess checklist

Before you press Enter, run through this:

  1. No gray letters?
  2. Greens in place?
  3. Yellows in new spots?
  4. Could a letter repeat?
  5. Is there a family of similar words I should list first?

Five quick questions, a few seconds each. Make them a habit and you'll see more green, more often.
